Traditional blackjack games were never a real favourite in the casinos of Las Vegas, because of the low margins and because Blackjack is a very tough game to play and master. This game can only be beaten by a small percentage of the players playing. There were many opportunities to let the game go during the 1980s in the era of the MIT Blackjack team – when they were at the highest point, but it wasn’t so. With the advent of poker and its increasing popularity amongst players, stormy days were ahead of the casinos. With poker, a lot of money will change hands, often in the hundreds of thousands – but there is no real profit to the casino, who often earn a fixed charge for playing their part in this exchange of money.

So with this in mind, what is, therefore, the future of gambling?

For most European websites that do bookmaking, online poker games are treated as nothing more than an extra add-on – there were small sites relative to the websites that exist now in terms of liquid cash availability until the year 2005. Newer pastimes are emerging out, thanks to the behemoth of technology which has introduced a new medium for betting, eSports.

eSports brings about a new era of skill-based video games, and it is extremely popular with many bookies because of the high profitability rates and low investment costs involved in setting it up. eSports have become so popular, that even in Las Vegas, which is considered to be the central hub for all betting related activities, and which till now was also considered to solely be a gambling hub, from a purist’s point of view, is now being captured by eSports venues – The most famous eSport venue in Las Vegas being the HyperX Sports Arena situated in the Luxor Hotel.

eSporting games attract a lot of millennials looking to earn their luck with their “skills”. Millennials are more caught up with games that give them rewards based on their skill and good performance, rather than games like slots or bingo which just reward based on pure luck. Taking a cue from these pointers, casinos have started to upgrade their gaming options to include more eSports based options, which brings in customers (thus being good for business, helping them to stave off losses and make profits) and keeps them engaged for longer at the games.

Regulations and laws brought up instead of these developments stipulate that all people playing the game must have an equal chance of winning the game, and so the casinos must keep to that rule whilst developing and installing these games on their premises. However, there was a ruling from lawmakers in the state of Nevada stating that players who play with higher skills are eligible for higher rewards, and this also has been taken into account by casinos. All of these measures have been taken in the hope to make traditional betting games much more attractive to young betters.
